The plentiful program of the 22<sup>nd<\/sup> ZFF includes <strong>as many as six contenders for the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Award \u2013 the Oscar for Best International Feature<\/strong>: Belgian, British, French, Latvian, Lithuanian and Thai, while <strong>nine feature-film titles<\/strong> (7 fiction and 2 animated) from this year\u2019s program are in the running for the <strong>European Film Awards<\/strong>, the so-called European Oscars.<\/p>\n<p>Three films are currently in the race for both Oscars \u2013 the American and European one. These are <a href=\"https:\/\/2024.zff.hr\/en\/movies\/julie-keeps-quiet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Julie Keeps Quiet<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (Main Program: Feature Film competition), <a href=\"https:\/\/2024.zff.hr\/en\/movies\/emilia-perez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (The Great 5) and <a href=\"https:\/\/2024.zff.hr\/en\/movies\/flow-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Flow<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (Network of Festivals in the Adriatic Region).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leonardo Van Dijl<\/strong>\u2019s Belgian feature<strong><em> <a href=\"https:\/\/2024.zff.hr\/en\/movies\/julie-keeps-quiet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Julie Keeps Quiet<\/a><\/em><\/strong> is a tense character study about a young tennis player who finds herself in the midst of a scandal involving her coach. With <strong>Naomi Osaka<\/strong> as executive producer, the film\u2019s excellent film crew includes director of photography <strong>Nicolas Karakatsanis<\/strong> (<em>I, Tonya, Cruella<\/em>), the music is composed by Pulitzer-winner <strong>Caroline Shaw<\/strong>, while the lead performance of the young <strong>Tessa Van den Broeck<\/strong>, herself a former\u00a0tennis player, has been especially praised. The film premiered in Cannes, winning the SACD Award, and was also nominated for this year\u2019s LUX Audience Award.<\/p>\n<p>The sumptuous French pop opera<strong><em> <a href=\"https:\/\/2024.zff.hr\/en\/movies\/emilia-perez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/a><\/em><\/strong> by <strong>Jacques Audiard<\/strong> (<em>A Prophet<\/em>, <em>Rust and Bone<\/em>, <em>Dheepan<\/em>) scooped up the Jury Prize for Direction and the Best Actress Award at Cannes (for the ensemble cast of Selena Gomez, Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n, Zoe Salda\u00f1a and Adriana Paz). Overqualified and underappreciated, lawyer Rita (Zoe Salda\u00f1a) spends more time worrying about getting criminals out of trouble than bringing them to justice. One day, she gets an unexpected way out when the drug cartel boss, Manitas (Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n), hires her to help him accomplish a secret plan. Manitas wants to retire from the cartel, embrace her true self, and finally become a woman.<\/p>\n<p>Latvian director <strong>Gints Zilbalodis\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/2024.zff.hr\/en\/movies\/flow-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Flow<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is the first animated film in one of ZFF\u2019s competition programs. Premiering in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival, <em>Flow<\/em> was immediately recognised by <em>IndieWire<\/em> critics as one of the \u201cmost groundbreaking animated films about nature since <em>Bambi<\/em>\u201d. The feature about a cat that wakes up in a flooded world and must overcome its fear of water while searching for land with a group of other animals is a real animated spectacle, but also a layered meditation on the fragility of our environment and the spirit of friendship and community.<\/p>\n<p>Just as interesting are the other contenders in the race for International Oscars: Thailand is represented by <a href=\"https:\/\/2024.zff.hr\/en\/movies\/how-to-make-millions-before-grandma-dies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, a touching comedy drama by <strong>Pat Boonnitipat<\/strong> that broke box office records across Asia; Lithuania\u2019s contender <a href=\"https:\/\/2024.zff.hr\/en\/movies\/drowning-dry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Drowning Dry<\/em><\/strong><\/a> directed by Venice laureate <strong>Laurynas Barei\u0161a<\/strong> is an intriguing cinematic puzzle piece; while United Kingdom has offered up <strong><em>Santosh<\/em><\/strong>, a brilliant crime thriller directed by <strong>Sandhya Suri<\/strong> (<em>I For India<\/em>, ZFF 2005) screened at Cannes, Toronto and Karlovy Vary. The shortlist consisting of 15 finalists will be announced on 17 December, while the final five will be known on 17 January 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The other contenders for the European Film Awards screening in ZFF\u2019s programs are: Romanian <a href=\"https:\/\/2024.zff.hr\/en\/movies\/the-new-year-that-never-came\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The New Year That Never Came<\/em><\/strong><\/a> by <strong>Bogdan Mure\u0219anu<\/strong>, Icelandic <a href=\"https:\/\/2024.zff.hr\/en\/movies\/when-the-light-breaks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>When the Light Breaks<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, directed by the guest of the 22nd ZFF <strong>R\u00fanar R\u00fanarsson<\/strong>, German\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/2024.zff.hr\/en\/movies\/dying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Dying<\/em><\/strong><\/a> by <strong>Matthias Glasner<\/strong>, Lithuanian <a href=\"https:\/\/2024.zff.hr\/en\/movies\/toxic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Toxic<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, a look into the merciless world of modelling and catwalks directed by <strong>Saul\u0117 Bliuvait\u0117<\/strong>, and <strong>Pedro Almod\u00f3var\u2019s<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/2024.zff.hr\/en\/movies\/the-room-next-door\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The Room Next Door<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. Along with <em>Flow<\/em>, <strong>Kristina Dufkova\u2019s<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/2024.zff.hr\/en\/movies\/living-large\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Living Large<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, from the KinoKino program is also a candidate for the European Film Award in the Animated Feature Film category.
